Hardware
A brief run-down of the more notable pieces of kit I use.
- Kinky, a black 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook, 2GB RAM running Mac OS X 10.4 (“Tiger”). This replaces…
- … Ethelred, an 800MHz G4 (flat-screen) iMac. 768MB RAM running Mac OS X 10.4, which has now been completely taken-over by the family
- Netgear DG834GT wireless ADSL router.
- LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme, Triple Interface: 250GB external hard drive
- When I was gainfully employed, I used IBM / Lenovo Thinkpads, and they’re fine machines (apart from the OS obviously). Now I’m on my own, it’s Mac all the way baby!
Software: development
Not a lot really…
- MyEclipse: a worthwhile add-in to Eclipse. A superb development environment, especially for all that new-fangled JEE stuff…
- VMWare Fusion for when I need to use Windoze. Awesome.
- Coda a lovely web development application
- IBM Lotus Notes. Well, yes! When code is required, out comes Fusion
- TextPad: an excellent text editor, with download-able syntax files for programming in just about any language. This app never gets closed on the XP virtual machine.
- Pipette is a great little tool, and well worth grabbing. It does one thing, and one thing only. Use it to match colours when developing for the web (or wherever else). The price is right too! (The equivalent tool I use on the PC is Pixie).
Software: browsers
I care not a jot for IE. Favoured browsers, in order of preference and usage:
- Safari on the Mac
- Mozilla Firefox on the virtual machine and Mac
Useful Firefox extensions
Some aren’t currently in use, but are still notable—hence the strike-throughs:
- Firebug, of course!
- Web developer toolbar
Add & Edit CookiesLiveHTTPHeaders: utterly brilliant, and very useful- IETab: embed an instance of IE in a Firefox tab!
- ProxyButton for switching Firefox set-ups
