Screenshot time

Just took a screenshot for the hell of it. I had quite a lot of stuff running tonight, and I hadn’t done a “Dashboard” shot for a while, so figured I’d upload a new shot to Flickr.

Click for larger view of current OS X set-upNote the up-time of around eight days: quite low for this Mac, but doing better than Stinky, who has had six re-starts just today (WinXP keeps “losing” a handle on the network wherever I am, and the explorer task constantly crashes, occasionally taking out the whole machine with it). Now, Ethelred, my iMac, is quite a modest machine by today’s standards. Yet look at all the apps he’s running without even breaking into a sweat! That’s the way to do it… ;-)

By the way, the Simpsons “fortune cookie”-style widget, SimpsonBot, is great.

Could you list your widgets and where we can get them?

  2. I take it that Stinky is losing wireless connections? If so, they're not so much lost as periodically thrown away by the Wireless Zero Configuration service. You'll need to turn that puppy off after making the connection:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\net.exe stop wzcsvc

and if you hibernate rather than turn off, you'll need a way to make the connection again when you resume:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\net.exe start wzcsvc

I've put these commands into desktop icons, but you can throw them into menu items too if you prefer.Stan Rogers#
  3. Thanks Stan, I shall give that a shot. It usually happens with wireless, but often with wired too. ’s very odd.Ben Poole#
  4. Richard, sure. They’re all downloadable from the Apple widget site, but anyway, more detail:

The weather widget is a BBC one, available from http://backstage.bbc.co.uk/

    SimpsonBot is available from http://people.umass.edu/jlink/

    SysStat is at http://www.islayer.net/

    UK TV Guide: http://www.ponyfoam.com/tvwidget/

The others are standard Tiger ones.Ben Poole#
  5. Alright, Q&A time. On the dock, what is the penguin, the AB thingy and the icon right of that?Volker Weber#
  6. Penguin = Tux Paint, a simple paint package for kids. AB thingie = Alpha Baby, amusement for, er, babies ;-) Lastly, the icon to the right of that is Bits On Wheels, which I posted about the other day.Ben Poole#
  7. Thanks. But you are not telling me, that the kids use the same login as You? Or that Alpha Baby and Tux Paint are your toys?

At least it would explain certain Skype messages. ;-)Volker Weber#
  8. Not my toys, no! The kids have their own account, they just don't always SWITCH to it. I have enabled the screensaver password now due to aforementioned Skype episode. Heh heh. As for AlphaBaby, purely there to run quickly when the infant hoves on the scene :-) Ben Poole#
  9. W00t! Tux Paint! :^DBill Kendrick#
  10. Cool, the man himself! Thanks for dropping by Bill ;-) Ben Poole#
