You’ve Got To Laugh

Cover to Nik Kershaw's album 'You've Got To Laugh'Those who know me well also know that I am a long-time fan of a certain Mr. Nik Kershaw. Of course, to some, this just means snoods, fingerless gloves, ’80s mullets, the whole shebang. But these things do the man a great disservice. Last Thursday he released his seventh studio album, You’ve Got To Laugh. It is fantastic. The album features the talents of people like Simon Phillips and Nick Beggs. Oh yes! And of course, the luminous Imogen Heap. Update: I meant to mention that a singer local to Nik (he lives in my neck of the woods) also features, and she has a gorgeous voice. So, look out for Lily Gonzalez!

Regular readers know that I don’t really do track-by-track reviews of music on this site, and I’m not going to start now. Suffice it to say, there are some beautiful moments on the CD (a few tracks are real hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck numbers), combined with a wry line in humour. Kershaw’s wit really is to the fore on this album (…fundamental Christian, yeah ‘fundament’ is right when singing about a certain George Bush), together with some gloriously Holdsworth-ian guitar lines. Indeed, whilst the focus is (quite rightly) on the songs, Nik Kershaw is a seriously good guitarist, I love his style of playing.

You’ve Got To Laugh is available only via Nik’s website. You probably won’t be able to get a signed copy like me though, they all went last week :-)

  1. As I have great faith in your taste in music (you introduced me to Groove Armada and I've never looked back) I have just clicked 'Pay' on my PayPal purchase of Nik's album. Cheers, mate!Chrissie#
  2. :-) Oh, the responsibility. You mad fool. Well, the opening track is OK as they go, but but be sure to listen to All About You or She Could Be The One as soon as you can. I think they're my faves at the moment.Ben Poole#
  3. This title just got me thinking this could be another Radicati stunt. Glad it's not. ;-)Vitor Pereira#
  4. Bring back the '80s!!! Well, keep the mullets and parachute pants but the music was amazing.Ed Maloney#
