On the future of virtual worlds

Immersive on-line games and experiences like Second Life, Star Wars Galaxies, World Of Warcraft, et al have recently received the BBC news treatment. One quote in particular jumped out at me, given discussions around IBM’s involvement in Second Life:

Five years from now a social networking site without a 3D universe will look like a dinosaur.

The article touches upon the idea that social network sites will increasingly converge with the multi-player gaming and immersive experience sites. This definitely makes sense to me—things like presenting the Lotusphere 2007 opening general session in Second Life make IBM look extraordinarily prescient!
